From that link: The Subcommittee on Federalism and the Census is responsible for authorizing legislation affecting the US Census Bureau. The Subcommittee also has limited legislative jurisdiction on general policies affecting state and local governments, especially as they interact with the Federal government.
In the 109th Congress the Subcommittee will explore issues surrounding the interaction between federal, state and local governments. The Subcommittee will explore issues such as unfunded mandates; grant management; intergovernmental coordination and cooperation; and general issues involving the US Census Bureau. Specifically the Subcommittee plans to review the Community Development Block Grant Program and other programs important to the revitalization of America's cities. The Committee will also inquire into what efforts can be undertaken by the Federal government to assist state and local entities in addressing community development, historic preservation, brownfield relief and other issues.
Current chairman: Michael R. Turner (OH-03), former Mayor of Dayton (1994-2002). His opponent in the 2006 election, Stephanie Studebaker, was arrested on Aug 14, 2006 in a domestic violence dispute with her husband.
Turner's major contributors include NCR Corp. of Dayton, developers, realtors, and bankers/credit unions. --Pat of butter in a sea of grits 09:14, 14 November 2006 (PST)
