Christopher Rants is a conservative Republican from Sioux City, Iowa. Born on September 16, 1967, Rants was raised and educated in Iowa. He and his wife Trudy have two daughters.
He represents District 54, Woodbury County, in the Iowa State House, where he was the Speaker from 2003-2006, and Minority Leader from 2007-2008. He lost his position as minority leader after the 2008 elections.
Special Interest Money
- On February 2, 2006, the Des Moines Register reported that the owner of the state's largest car title loan company, LoanMax owner Rod Aycox of Alpharetta, Ga., gave $40,000 to a conservative Republican leadership organization with ties to House Speaker Christopher Rants.
- Rants has consistently opposed raising Iowa's cigarette tax, and according to Iowa for Health Care spokesperson, Sarah Swisher, Rants received more than 76 percent of tobacco-related contributions to Iowa House members in 2004.
- Rants took $25,000 from the owner of hundreds of Touch Play video lottery machines (William Krause) on Oct. 17, 2006, but then one week later he accused Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chet Culver of making a secret deal to bring back Touch Play machines after Culver also received a contribution from Mr. Krause.
