Chip Pearson

From dKosopedia

Chip Pearson is a balding, mustached real estate construction tycoon and one of the top Republican donors in Georgia. He used his personal wealth to finance a successful campaign for a seat in the Georgia State Senate so that he could directly push his anti-environment agenda.

Through his Pecos, Inc. PAC, Pearson has bankrolled numerous Republican campaigns, including the candidacy of anti-environment nativist Casey Cagle for Lieutenant Governor. Pearson and fellow right winger Chip Rogers form the so-called "Chips Caucus" of the Georgia Senate with Cagle, David Shafer, Jeff Mullis and others.

Pearson's top legislative priority is a bill that would require the State of Georgia to compensate landowners whose "property rights" are violated by anti-pollution regulations. Pearson forced his bill through the Senate in 2006 but wiser heads prevailed in the House where it was resoundingly defeated.

For his pro-pollution legislation, Pearson has been named to the "Dirty Dozen + 1" by the Georgia Sierra Club. Other State Senators who are members of the Dirty Dozen + 1 include John Bulloch, Ralph Hudgens, Nancy Schaefer and Tommie Williams.

Pearson's agenda is not limited to promoting pollution. Pearson is eager to co-sponsor any bill that sticks it to Hispanic immigrants, medical malpractice victims, or needy children. Pearson co-sponsored the infamous anti-Hispanic legislation by Senator Chip Rogers.

Pearson was a major backer of Christian Coalition founder Ralph Reed but grew disenchanted with Reed when he was unable to control him the way he controls lesser known politicians. After trashing David Shafer for having the audacity to run against his then icon Ralph Reed for the state chairmanship of the Republican Party, Pearson reconciled with Shafer and joined forces with him to support Casey Cagle against Reed for Lieutenant Governor.

Pearson and his reactionary ideas have largely been kept at bay by the Senate GOP Leadership. Progessives are terrified by the prospect of Cagle winning the Lieutenant Governor's race and installing Pearson into a position of responsibility. An unleashed Pearson worries sane Republicans as well.
