Dr. Andrea "Andy" McGuire, is chief medical officer and vice president of American Republic Insurance Co. in Des Moines. She has also worked as a staff physician at the VA hospital in Des Moines.
She ran for Democratic Lt. Gov. of Iowa as Mike Blouin's running mate; she has also been his campaign co-chairwoman; however, Blouin lost the primary. Originally from Waterloo, she has never held elective office but is viewed as a skillful fundraiser by fellow Democrats.
Unlike her pro-life running mate, McGuire supports abortion rights and has been active in promoting Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa. She graduated from Creighton University medical school in 1982.
According to the Chet Culver campaign, McGuire was registered to vote as a Republican in 2004, and has donated to both Republican and Democratic candidates.
Andrea McGuire is married with two children. Her sister-in-law, Sheila McGuire was a past Democratic Party chairwoman.
