Wheeler Army Air Field

Wheeler Army Airfied, is a former Air Force base located 16 miles north of Honolulu, Hawaii adjacent to Schofield Barracks. Wheeler was returned to the Department of the Army on Nov. 1, 1991. Wheeler AAF is comprised of approximately 1,389 acres of land. The airfield was named in honor of Major Sheldon H. Wheeler on Nov. 11 1922. Maj. Wheeler, former commander of Luke Field on Ford Island, died when his plane crashed during a demonstration on July 13, 1921.
In August 1987, the Secretary of the Interior designated Wheeler AAF, a National Historic Landmark, recognizing it as a site of national significance in the history of the United States and in particular, World War II.

- Air Force’s 6010th Aerospace Defense Group
- Hawaii Army National Guard Aviation Support Facility
- 25th Infantry Division (Light) Aviation Brigade
