Republican Paul Whalen "represents" the 3rd Senatorial District in the Hawaii State Senate of the Hawaii State Legislature. The 3rd Senatorial District includes the Kohala, Kona and Ka'u areas of the island of Hawaii. Sen. Whalen has won reelection to his seat by beating Democratic newcomber, Steven Fox in the 2004 general election:

Sen. Whalen, professionally, is an attorney, having graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law and has worked as a Deputy Prosecutor in both Honolulu and Hawai'i County before entering politics as a State Representative. When the new Third Senatorial District was mandated by reapportionment in 2002, Whalen ran and won the seat in race with Virginia Isbell:

Environment/Gay Rights
Whalen has an anti-environmental and extremely anti-gay voting record as a state senator. During the 2005 legislative session, Whalen, along with all republican senators, voted against bills that would prohibit Hawaii's landlords and employers from discriminating against gays, lesbians or transsexuals.
