Virginia Isbell was elected in 2004 to represent the 7th Council district in Hawaii County but lost reelection in 2006. District 7 includes South Kona (portions of Honaunau, Capt. Cook, Kealakekua), and North Kona (Kainaliu, Keauhou, Kahaluu, Holualoa).
Isbell is no stranger to politics. She had won eight straight term in the Hawaii State House of Representatives from 1980 to 1996, her last four years was as a Democrat after a falling out with the GOP when she attempted to fill a Senate vacancy in 1988.
In 1996, she left the Legislature and ran unsuccessfully for Big Island mayor.
Councilwoman Isbell is a former teacher and longtime community volunteer. She is married and has five children. The Isbells have lived on the Big Island for more than 40 years and live in Kealakekua.
