Mufi Hannemann

Mufi Hannemann, the former Mayor of Honolulu, was first elected Mayor in 2004 and reelected again in 2008. On July 20, 2010, Hannemann resigned as mayor to run in the 2010 Hawaii gubernatorial election.
Born Muliufi Francis Hannemann in Honolulu on July 16, 1954 and raised in Kalihi, Hannemann was the sixth of seven children in a family of Samoan, German and English ancestry. His parents emigrated from American Samoa and settled in Kalihi in 1953, after spending a few years on Guam.

Politics
- Hannemann ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1986 and in 1990.
- In 1994, Hannemann ran for City Council to replace Arnold Morgado, who decided to run for mayor. Hannemann won with more than 51 percent of the vote in a race that included five other candidates, so no runoff election was necessary. He won re-election in 1998 unopposed.
- Hannemann was voted chairman of the Honolulu City Council in a 1998 reshuffling that ousted John DeSoto from the chairmanship. A year later, the council split again and Hannemann was voted out as chairman. The ousting was supported by Duke Bainum and resulted in councilman Jon Yoshimura replacing Hannemann as chairman.
- Hannemann stepped down from the council early in his second term to run for mayor in 2000 against Mayor Jeremy Harris and Frank F. Fasi. Mayor Harris won reelection.
- In 2004, Hannemann won reelection with 49.3% of the vote over Duke Bainum who garnered 48.8%.
- In 2008, Hannemann won the Honolulu Mayoral race with 58% of the vote over councilwoman Ann Kobayashi.
- On July 20, 2010, Hannemann resigns as Honolulu's Mayor to run for Governor.
Personal
Mufi married Gail Mukaihata Hannemann in 1992 and they live in Aiea.
