Mike McCartney

Mike McCartney, has won the Chairmanship of the Hawaii Democratic Party in May of 2006. He follows Brickwood Galuteria as the party's chairman. McCartney was president and chief executive officer of PBS Hawaii, and was a former state legislator and Cabinet officer for former Gov. Benjamin J. Cayetano.
In a May 11, 2006 Star-Bulletin article, Richard Borreca and Erika Engle reported,
McCartney previously said he was considering either a campaign for governor or lieutenant governor this year, but withdrew in favor of working as a party leader.
"I believe in the party, and I want to get back into public service," McCartney said.
He served 10 years in the state Senate and two years as state director of human resources under former Gov. Ben Cayetano.
"For me the community is my canvas and politics is my paint," McCartney said.
"We have to create hope and not just say there is something wrong with the Republicans. We want to say what is good about the Democrats," McCartney said.
McCartney was a state senator representing the 23rd Senatorial District in the Hawaii State Senate of the Hawaii State Legislature. The 23rd District, before redistricting, included the Kaneohe, Kahuku and Heeia areas of the island of Oahu, in the state of Hawaii. Mccartney was a member of the Hawaii State Legislature from 1988 to 1998 and was chairman or co-chairman of committees on labor and human resources, education and higher education.
McCartney previously worked as a field representative for the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA).
McCartney was director of the Department of Human Resources Development in the administration of Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano from 1998 to 2000.

- McCartney continued to serve the community by serving on various community boards including: past chairman of the Hawaii Tourism Authority; current board member for the Hawaii Justice Foundation; board member for the Royal State Trust; board member for the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution; and former board member of Pacific Resources in Education and Learning. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Freshman Legislator of the Year (1989) from the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly, Client Advocate Award from the University Cerebral Palsy Association of Hawaii (1991) and Lawmaker of the Year from Small Business Hawaii. - A lifelong resident of Hawaii, McCartney is married to Dr. Candace Furubayashi and is the father of two sons and a daughter. [1]
McCartney stepped down as party chairman on October 15, 2007 to became executive director of the 13,000-member Hawaii State Teachers Association. Jeani Withington was named interim chairwoman until a new chairman is elected in May 2008.
