Massey is the son of poultry lobbyist Abit Massey, who himself was once touted as a rising star of the Democratic Party. Lewis Massey worked on Democratic campaigns while in high school and college and joined the staff of Governor Joe Frank Harris after finishing college in 1985.
Massey managed the successful campaign of Pierre Howard for Lieutenant Governor in 1990, and after the election, became Howard's chief of staff. He managed Howard's reelection campaign in 1994.
Governor Zell Miller appointed Massey as Secretary of State when Max Cleland resigned that office in 1995 to run for United States Senator. Massey won election to rest of Cleland's term in 1996, defeating Republican candidate David Shafer.
Massey ran for Governor in 1998, declaring his candidacy immediately after the sudden withdrawal of Pierre Howard from the race. Massey finished a poor second to Roy Barnes in the Democratic Primary. He suspended his campaign during the run-off and endorsed Barnes who went on to win the nomination and defeat the Republican candidate Guy Millner in the general election.
Massey now works as a lobbyist in partnership with former Attorney General Mike Bowers, a Republican who also ran for Governor in 1998. Bowers lost the Republican Primary to Guy Millner.
Massey is a gradute of the University of Georgia where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and the Gridiron Secret Society.
