Hawaii U.S. House district 1 special election, 2010

On May 22, 2010 a special election was held to fill vacancy to House district 1 (HI-01), vacated on February 28, 2010 by former Rep. Neil Abercrombie who is now campaigning for the Hawaii governorship. House district one encompasses urban Oahu.

Candidates for the House special election were former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, both Democrats and Republican City Councilman Charles Djou among others.

This special election was an all-party primary where the winner needed to gain a plurality of the vote. With two Democrats possibly splitting the Democratic vote, the lone Republican, Charles Djou, won the election.

Registered voters in the 1st Congressional District recieved a ballot in early May. Completed ballots were to be returned by 6 p.m. on May 22. [1]

Ed Case was the congressman in House District 2, HI-02, for two terms starting in 2003, but in 2006 ran instead for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Democrat senator Daniel Akaka, losing in the primary. Of the Democrats that ran for the HI-02 seat in 2006, Mazie Hirono defeated Colleen Hanabusa in the primary by about 800 votes. Both Case and Hanabusa have just run for the other Hawaii House seat in district 1, HI-01 in this past special election.
