12 years of dedicated legislative service, of effective, accessible advocacy for constituents. Avel Gordly is making life better for District 23, and for all of Oregon.
As your State Senator, Avel Gordly has built a record of accomplishment and dedication, not just to the district, but to all of Oregon. One of the legislature's most effective and influential members, Avel is a voice for reason and justice amid the competing pressures of Salem.
From advocating for unique distance learning programs that beam Portland public school courses all over Oregon, to being a champion for jobs, education, housing and health care for all, Avel has been called the conscience of the Oregon Senate, dedicated to serving all Oregonians.
Now, more than ever, we need the strong leadership, compassion and commitment that Avel Gordly brings.
Avel Gordly fought for access to medications, mental health treatment, housing and services for seniors and vulnerable populations. She supported prescription drug bulk purchasing.
She resisted attempts to reduce the state education budget and secured the restoration of $1 million in pre-kindergarten funding to help the poorest of Oregon's children.
She continues to lead statewide efforts to hold Oregon schools—public and private—accountable for multicultural competency, and she champions efforts to integrate multicultural competence as a standard for teacher and administrator licensure.
100% rating by the Oregon League of Conservation Voters in 2003.
Affiliations
In summer '06 (not an election year for her), Gordly dropped her Democratic Party affiliation, to become (with Ben Westlund, Bend) one of two Independent state Senators. Reasons cited are partisan gridlock, and the closing of the Democratic caucus to media coverage.
In related news, Gordly was one of very few senators to vote against HB 2614 in 2005, which denied voters registered with a party the right to sign petitions for Independent candidates. She has urged consideration of the One Ballot initiative, which would establish a blanket primary in which all voters use the same ballot, and the top two finishers (regardless of party) advance to the General Election. She also supports a non-partisan legislature. (The details of this are unclear. Nebraska is currently the only state in which legislative candidates run without party affiliation.)
