Oregon State Senate District 23

From dKosopedia

The first paragraph below is inaccurate in several ways - was something copied & pasted from House District 45 (which comprises half of Senate 23?) Is the rest of this post accurate? Problems: there is no such district as Senate 45, and much of Senate 23 (which this page is supposed to be about) is in SE Portland, in addition to the portion in NE Portland. House 46 is very white (with some Asian and Russian), so I'm not sure whether the "most diverse" claim holds true. A source would be nice for a claim like that. Peteforsyth 00:06, 6 July 2006 (PDT)

State Senate District 45 in NE Portland Oregon is the most diverse district in the state, economically, racially and ethnically. Some breaf background on the district:

Health care: 114,000 Oregonians reside in the district. 43,000 are—or were—on the Oregon Health Plan, or are classified as medically needy. The recent cuts to services forced by revenue shortfalls hit SD 23 harder than any district in the state, in terms of sheer numbers. Access to health care and prescription medications are vital. Senator Gordly is also working with Governor Kulongoski to reinstate the Racial and Ethnic Health Task Force by executive order.

Housing:' 64% of Senate District 23 residents overall are homeowners, but in some neighborhoods the percentage of renters is much greater. Home ownership is a key factor in stabilizing neighborhoods and is the foundation of accumulating wealth. We must increase affordable housing opportunities.

Education: Portland Community College’s new Southeast campus is one of the keys to the economic health of the district. Community colleges are where we produce our workforce and offer retraining and skill development. Budget impacts have put too many people on classroom waiting lists.

Business and Economic Development: SD 23’s key strength is its racial and ethnic diversity. Minority-owned, women-owned and emerging small businesses are driving the recovery of Oregon’s economy statewide. SD 23 is rich in this resource.
