- Faced with uproar in the 13 colonies and threats of colonial boycott of British goods, Parliament repeals the Stamp Tax. Simultaneously Parliament passes the Declaratory Act affirming that it has the right to legislate for the colonies "in all cases whatsoever".

- January 25: The Wallachian hospodar or prince emancipates Gypsies who are married to Moldavians. Others remain slaves or serfs.
- February 1766: Benjamin Franklin is examined before the British House of Commons about the Stamp Act.
