- British Parliament passes tax on paper used in American colonies. Since paper on which tax had been paid was stamped, this was known as the Stamp Tax. Resulting furor in 13 Colonies resulted in Stamp Act Congress which reaffirmed loyalty to Crown but argued that only colonies, not Parliament, had taxation power.
Timeline
- August 12: Mughal Emperor of India transfers Diwani (tax collection rights) over the wealthy province of Bengal to the British East India Company. The John Company gets to keep everything it collects in taxes over 325,000 English pounds. The British begin soaking Bengal. When they leave in 1945 there is nothing left but massive poverty.
