Wing Kong Chong

Wing Kong Chong, (b. 1916 - d. 2006), a Republican, was elected to the former Board of Supervisors of Hawaii County in 1960-62, serving temporarily as chairman. Chong was a member of the Hawaii State House of Representatives from 1971 to 1974 representing the Big Island. He ran for Hawaii County mayor in 1972 and 1974, both times against the eventual winner, Democrat Herbert Matayoshi. [1]
Chong, born in Hilo, graduated from Hilo High in 1936, attended the University of Hawaii. He earned a bachelor's degree from Miami University in Ohio in 1940 and a master's degree in education from Columbia University in 1941. [2]
Chong taught at Mountain View Elementary, Hilo Intermediate and Hilo High.
He was a Boy Scout leader for more than 30 years.
After leaving politics in the 1970s, he remained active in the insurance business.
Ching married in 1948 and is survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter and five grandchildren. [3]
