Wesley Chesbro

Category: California Democrats
Wesley Chesbro resides in Arcata, a longtime liberal bastion 300 miles north of San Francisco in the Redwood Empire. Though Arcata has a long history of progressive politics, and frequently features Green majorities on its city council, the rest of District 2 has only recently moved substantially to the left. Pockets of conservatism still exist in the inland areas of the district. Chesbro represents the Napa wine country, the libertarian hippie enclaves of Mendocino, the expanding Latino population of Sonoma county, the rapidly gentrifying city of Vallejo across the Bay from San Francisco, and the bustling art and science communities of Humboldt. The timber industry, formerly dominant here, is suffering from recent electoral defeat in the thwarted recall attempt of Humboldt County DA Gallegos and is far less of a political force than it was even ten years ago.
The seat which previously represented a starkly polarized community is now relatively safe for the Democrats, though it should not be taken for granted just yet.
Chesbro chairs the wine and mental health committees in the state senate. He has served in the senate since 1998. He has lived in Humboldt County for 34 years and received a perfect score from the League of Conservation Voters in 2004.
Major industries in this district: Marijuana, Wine, Timber, & Tourism.
