Washington Place
From dKosopedia
Washington Place is the name of the former Governor's mansion in Hawaii. On April 4, 2007, Washington Place was named a National Historic Landmark.
According to a Honolulu Star-Bulletin editorial dated April 8, 2007:
- "Built by Capt. John Dominis in 1847, the stately Greek-revival mansion was passed on to his son, John Owen Dominis, who married Liliuokalani in 1862. The queen was arrested at the home during the 1893 overthrow and lived there until her death in 1917.
- Later, Washington Place was the executive mansion for a dozen governors. Vicky Cayetano, the last first lady to live there, raised $1.3 million in mostly private funds to build a new governor's mansion in back of Washington Place, and Lingle became the first governor to inhabit the new official residence."
