Vermont Progressive Party

The Vermont Progressive Party (VPP) is Vermont's third largest political party. It achieved official statewide party status in the fall of 1999.

The VPP grew out of the Progressive Coalition that was based in Burlington.

Progressive Party principles include:

• Social and Economic Justice through electoral and other democratic activities • Representative democracy • Living Wages • Progressive Taxation • Ending Racism • Gay Rights

Progressives currently hold four seats in the Vermont House of Representatives as well as a plurality on the Burlington City Council. Burlington’s Mayor is also a Progressive Party member.

In 2000, Anthony Pollina became the first Progressive to run for governor, capturing 9.5% of the vote.

Former Burlington Mayor and current U.S. Rep. Bernard Sanders is credited with developing the Progressive Party movement in Vermont, though the independent is not officially a member of the party.
