UN High Commission for Refugees

The UN High Commission for Refugees (abbreviated UNHCR) monitors refugees worldwide and intervenes to protect their rights under various United Nations monitored conventions and agreements. It is one of the most important of the UN posts.

The Hurricane Katrina refugee situation is presently one of its concerns. One reason for concern is that the Bush Administration is using the invented term:evacuee to describe these people, possibly to deny them some rights. For instance, the right not to have their property seized under eminent domain.
