Tom Hancock (D) is currently serving his first term in the Iowa Senate. He represents Senate District 16, which includes Jones, Delaware, and Dubuque counties.
Senator Hancock is a member of the Agriculture, Judiciary, Natural Resources and Environment, and State Government committees. He is also a member of the Justice Systems Budget Subcommittee.
Senator Hancock is past president of the Iowa Fireman’s Association, a 15,000-member statewide organization. Senator Hancock joined the Epworth fire department in 1968 and worked his way up through the ranks to become fire chief in 1987. As chief, Senator Hancock led successful fundraising efforts to upgrade the department’s emergency and life-saving equipment. He retired from his post as fire chief in 2003. Senator Hancock has been a state-certified paramedic for many years.
In Epworth, Senator Hancock has been involved in many civic, business and community activities including the Epworth Economic Development Board, Epworth Jaycees, Dubuque County EMS Board, and the Local Emergency Planning committee.
During his tenure as president of the Iowa Fireman’s Association, Hancock served on Gov. Vilsack’s Homeland Security Advisory Board.
Senator Hancock and his wife, Coleen, have been married for 36 years and have one son, Steve. They are members of St. Patrick’s Church in Epworth.
