Iowa State Senator Tom Courtney is currently serving his second term in the Iowa Senate. He represents Senate District 44, which includes Des Moines and Louisa counties, Burlington, West Burlington, Mediapolis, Wapello, Morning Sun, and five precincts in Muscatine. He is also the Democratic Whip.
Senator Courtney’s main focus in the Senate is to bring new jobs to his district. Senator Courtney is Co-Chair of the Government Oversight Committee. He is also a member of the Agriculture, Business and Labor, Commerce, and Rules and Administration Committees.
Senator Courtney has been actively involved in his community. A member of UAW local 807, Senator Courtney is retired from Case/New Holland after 30 years of service. He has been a member of the Iowa Workforce Development and Southeast Iowa Health Center. Senator Courtney is a 6 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and he served 8 years on the Burlington School Board, 6 years as President.
Senator Courtney and his wife, Donna, an employee of the Burlington School District, have three children: Dawn; a special education teacher, Shawna; an elementary teacher; and Brian, who lives in Iowa City and attends Kirkwood Community College. They have four grandchildren.
