Thirty Years War

From dKosopedia

The Thirty Years War was a series of military campaigns, in the early 1600s, pitting France, Denmark, England, and other powers against the Hapsburg family, rulers of the Holy Roman Empire. The conflict started when Protestant nobles in Bohemia revolted against the ruling Hapsburgs, and the Catholic king. The revolution spread, and the weak Holy Roman Empire was unable to quell it.

The end of the war came with the signing of the Peace of Westphalia.

The war was a disaster for the populace and economy of the German states, and is regarded by some historians as a crucial factor in the relative secularization of German society thereafter.
