Analysis
Republicans invented the phrase death tax, which suggests the old saw: there are only two things in life that are inevitable, death and taxes. The implication of the name is that it’s a tax you’ll inevitably pay when you die. This is an outright lie – the tax is paid only by millionaires who inherit large estates.
Unfortunately, for every responsible journalist that uses the accurate phrase estate tax, there are three dishonest ones who use the phrase death tax.
My proposal is that liberals should start referring to the estate tax as the millionaire death tax. The only advantage of this phrase is that it shares two words in common with the phrase death tax. This creates an automatic association. Even if only one journalist in four uses the phrase millionaire death tax, it will be enough to faintly store the phrase in the reader’s mind. Then, when a dishonest journalist says the phrase death tax, the viewer will silently ask himself, “death tax – you mean the millionaire death tax?” This intentional association causes the viewer to remember that it’s a tax on millionaires, even when the journalist fails to use the accurate phrase.
Perhaps the "Heir Tax"?
