10/2/06: Finished cleaning up all of the tags including a semicolon, and removed some single tags along the way. (HeedTheMessenger)

I've done a lot of the "one offs" and names concentrating on "bush" and "kos." Goal was to try and do about 100 of them a day, but it seems that there are another 20 or 30 new ones every day. I created note to cut and paste into comments and that has expanded a bit as my frustration at fixing things and seeing them recreated grows. Last night I added a note to the tag editors workspace for the tags that seemed to work with the new Appeal for Redress and Liam Madden issue: http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/Tag:editor_portal#IRAQ_Related

I am pasting in tags to that page as I am editing and go through the All Tags to find the most used tag for various issues. Feel free to join in.

I did alot of the semicolons earlier and then could tell someone else was working on them and quit - I see there are now more.

I did all of the "extra spaces at the beginning" ones today.

10/25/06: I worked through a lot of the 9-11 and 2006 Elections tags a while ago and tried to condense those. I also started going down alphabetically to condense the one-off tags into tags that were used more. There's just so many!

I think the best thing to do is to focus on a single tag (like SarahLee mentioned, bush and kos) and find all the variations and try to condense those. I'm sure if there are enough of us working independently we can condense a lot of the approved tags.

Ahh. I've been trying to figure out for a while why tagging works so well on sites like del.icio.us (which has millions of tags, and no need for tag cleanup), yet so poorly as implemented at Daily Kos. I always thought we were being overly concerned with reducing the number of tags -- that having redundant and/or erroneous tags would be a benefit as long as we didn't have to see them all the time. But like this article points out, it's the fact that implementations like the one on del.icio.us are able to tag the same item with the same tag multiple times -- once for each user -- that enables them to filter out the spurious tags except when they're needed.

And the implementation on Daily Kos completely lacks that aspect. Hence the need for all the hand-pruning.

All this time I'd been thinking that tagging on Daily Kos just needed some interface tweaks -- not showing tags on story view, and implementing searches on tag unions -- but it's clearly much more critically flawed. —Abou Ben Adhem 21:16, 5 December 2006 (PST)
