Front Page Posts
In the first post on April 3, 2003, Steve was designated by kos as one of two guest posters, along with Billmon, while Markos was out of town. Steve's was the day's second post, and he did seven posts in all that first day. He then posted daily for over two weeks, even when Markos was back in town, and during a second out-of-town jaunt when Steve had the posting reins with new guest poster Ron K, Seattle, Billmon having finally opened the Whiskey Bar (his new blog) to customers.
Steve continued with Ron as substitute bloggers for Markos, who had an increasingly busy schedule. Steve set up his own blog in August, with his first post appearing August 6, 2003; the blog was announced to the Daily Kos community by Markos in a post on August 7: Steve Gilliard has a new blog. Steve only posted on two subsequent days: once on August 15, and a final spate of four on August 28, 2003.
If anyone can more definitively identify authorship on the handful of unsigned stories listed herein, please update as appropriate.
List of Post Links
When Steve started posting at Daily Kos, the blog was using Movable Type software. Markos was the sole blogger, and comment threads popped up in a separate window. The Movable Type site has subsequently been archived at DailyKos.net, and all links are to that archive.
In the archive, direct links can only be made to individual front-page posts, and to the entire comment threads of those posts. Steve stopped posting before the changeover from Movable Type to Scoop software—though he did continue writing comments afterwards—so all of his front page posts are in the archive.
His posts were initially signed "Steve Gilliard" at the bottom; in June, he thrice placed the auctorial credit at the beginning of the post after the title, and switched permanently to top credits as of July 1, 2003.
Each post also lists the number of comments Steve made (if any) and the total number of comments made to that post by Daily Kos readers. After signing his very first comment in 2002 "sgilliard", he switched to "steve gilliard", and used that comment signature until late April 2003, when he switched permanently to "steve_gilliard".
Late on July 1, and lasting through the morning of August 16, Movable Type comments were shut down on Daily Kos because they were overloading the ISP's server. HaloScan comments were made available as a substitute shortly before noon on July 2, and commenting almost certainly resumed its previous average pace of 750 comments a day, but all these comments were lost when Movable Type comments were re-enabled in August. Assuming these averages held up, that's approximately 34,000 comments lost to posterity.
Using HaloScan was supposed to be a stopgap of no more than a week while a new, dedicated server for Daily Kos was configured and installed; instead, due to major problems with that server, HaloScan remained in use for a month and a half. Unfortunately, all comments that Steve wrote in this period are lost. Given that he averaged about three comments in his own posts, that's nearly 300 of his comments gone from his posts alone, and who knows how many from those published by Markos and RonK, plus the open threads.
