Spinning

The term spinning derives from several sports in which a ball may be caused to deviate from its seemingly most likely path by hitting or pitching it in such a way that it spins around its own axis while in flight. If someone could actually influence the spin of a ball while it is in flight then the ball could be caused to hit somewhere other than where it was originally heading. Someone who "puts a different spin on" the remarks of a president or other prominent person does so with the intent of giving the statement a different kind of impact in the public arena.
