Talk:Single Payer
From dKosopedia
What are the Pros and cons of a "single payer" system? Advocates insist that attempts to use market forces in regard to health care choices are typically perverse, resulting in greater long term costs (both human and monetary), than any savings gained from short term personal savings. Opponents feel that without direct damage to the wallet of the people using the services, there is too much abuse of the privilege. Opponents also cite the restrictions to medical care imposed by cost containment and rationing that occur in single payer systems.
Here in the United States we can and should develop a two phased system that allows maximum choice while minimizing costs and guaranteeing access to medical care for all persons. Probably the best solution is going to be a Medicare Buy In system coupled wit the ACA that subsidizes health insurance for the working poor and extends Medicaid. So long as people under age 65 have the option to Buy In to Medicare (to do business with the National Medicare Insurance Company in the same way as they would any other health insurance provider INCLUDING SUBSIDIES) then there should be no need for the restrictions of "single payer". A national Medicare Insurance Company is all that is necessary to control medical costs in the United States. Medicare Buy In for those below age 65 can be Higher deductible for those who do not benefit from lower deductibles. As such Medicare Buy In offers the best of all worlds.
