Serena Cruz has been a Multnomah County Commissioner since 1998 representing District 2. Her family came to the Northwest in search of opportunity. Serena and her brother were the first in their family to finish high school and go on to college, thanks to good public schools, scholarships and student loans.
While at Lewis & Clark College, Serena came to love Portland and its possibilities. Knowing the difference higher education had made in her own life, Serena helped students with a broad range of life experiences as an Assistant Dean of Admissions at Lewis & Clark College and then as an Academic Advisor at Portland Community College.
She later earned a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a law degree from the University of California at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law.
Serena joined the law firm of Ball Janik LLP. In 1997, Serena left the law firm to work for City Commissioner Erik Sten.
As a County Commissioner, Serena works hard to make Multnomah County an even better place to live, work and raise a family. She and her staff are working to reduce Latino youth violence, eliminate homelessness, cover the uninsured, and prevent crime through effective alcohol and drug treatment programs. Given the current state of Oregon’s economy, she is also working to increase the resources needed to fund these critical initiatives.
Serena and her husband Tom Walsh (jr.) live in the Boise neighborhood.
