Scott Howell is a known associate of Karl Rove. Based in Dallas, Texas, Howell is famously credited for doing one of the worst smear campaigns in the history of political advertising. He was responsible for the smear of triple-amputee and Vietnam War Hero, former Senator from Georgia, Max Cleland, saying that he loved Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden .

In 2004, Jerry Kilgore, the Republican candidate for Governor of Virginia, hired Howell as his media strategist.

Howell has previously worked for Senator John Thune, Jim DeMint, Norm Coleman, Jim Talent, Saxby Chambliss, Jack Ryan, Dino Rossi, and also was a member of the Bush-Cheney 2004 re-election campaign media team.

Howell was partly responsible for the smear of Tom Daschle, the former Senate Democratic leader.

Affiliations

Although Scott Howell is often credited with the infamous, Osama Bin Laden Spot, (actually titled, "11 Times") he was in no way responsible for its creation. He has stated on several occasions that, while he was a member of the Chambliss team, he did not write or produce the spot. Howell's contribution to the Saxby Chambliss race consisted of five (5) positive spots out of the nearly 40 spots created for the campaign. The legendary spot was actually created by Tom Perdue and his partner, Leland Gregory, and was conceived and edited at Scene III Productions in Nashville, TN. The Perdue Group team won 1st place at the 2003 Pollie for Best Overall Television Campaign for Senator Chambliss' race - had Mr. Howell created the spot his name would have been on the award instead.
