She is a former executive at Meredith Corporation in Des Moines, where she was the senior food editor for Better Homes and Gardens. She was elected Lt. Governor of Iowa in 1998, and re-elected to a second four-year term in 2002. She declined to run for re-election in 2006.
She has been a tireless advocate for healthcare and education. She was instrumental in forcing Iowa's health insurance comapanies to cover mental illnesses, and she has worked for more accessible living options for disabled people. She is married to Jim Autry, and has raised her step-children.
Although she chose not to run for Governor in 2006, she has not said that she is leaving politics forever, and her name has been mentioned for the Third Congressional District (IA-03) if Boswell is not able to run.
