Roy Moore

From dKosopedia

A graduate of West Point and a Vietnam vet, Roy Moore ended up as the 28th Justice on the Supreme Court of Alabama, a position that normally doesn't garner much national media attention or political celebrity...that is until Moore decided to make his stand.

His stand, in this case, was a 5,300-pound granite monument of the Ten Commandments that more had installed on the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building in July of 2001.

The fallout over the monument was swift. Organizations such as the ACLU immediately petitioned for its removal, citing the Separation of Church and State, but Moore held fast, claiming that a belief in the Ten Commandments and Judeo-Christian principles was inherent in his oath of office and should be recognized. The case went to his fellow justices, and U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson ruled that the marker was an improper endorsement of religion by government and ordered it removed. Moore refused to comply with the ruling, and was later suspended by the Judicial Inquiry Commission, which charged him with six ethics violations for refusing the order. His case is still on appeal, but it is not expected to be overturned, and the United States Supreme Court has already refused to hear it.

Due to his defiant stand in favor of recognizing the role of Christianity in the justice system, however, Moore has become a hero for many conservative Christians. So much so that a segment of them have been urging him to run for President, or at the very least Governor of Alabama in 2006.

He has spoken at a few events for the Constitution Party, and the president of said party has said that the nomination is essentially Moore’s, if he wants it, leading many in the media to dub him the potential “conservative Nader”. The Constitution Party holds their convention on June 22nd, so Moore will have to decide by then.

From the point of view of the Democrats, his election as governor would almost be a godsend. And if he ran for President in 2008, he could split the solid Republican south.
