Richard Murphy, Mayor of San Diego and member of the Republican Party, resigned as Mayor effective July 25, 2005. Murphy had just won reelection in 2004 after a hotly contested three-way race for Mayor. Ron Roberts and Donna Frye were the other candidates in the 2004 election. San Diego's pension scandal had painted him with broad brush and he was unfairly named one of the America's three worst mayors by TIME magazine.

Richard Murphy was permanently succeeded by Jerry Sanders in a November 2005 special election.
