Narrative
Chafee remains relatively popular in heavily Democratic Rhode Island. It is rumored that he may switch parties to, in part, stave off a challenge from any number of well-funded RI Democrats. If not, he may also face a primary challenge as the national GOP is not particularly happy with the moderate senator. The only way Republicans keep this seat is for Chafee to run a strong race against a not so popular democrat.
