Prisoner of war
From dKosopedia
The international standard term for people known to be combatants imprisoned for the duration of conflicts for which there is no known end in sight is prisoner of war. This is used by all news media worldwide to describe the prisoners in Camp X-Ray, for instance. The United Nations recognizes certain rights of, and responsibilities to, every prisoner of war, regardless of the conflict. These are detailed in the Geneva Convention which predates the UN itself.
The term:illegal combatant is preferred by the Bush Administration and the Israeli government, both to sidestep these rights and for other political reasons.
This is similar to the use of the term:evacuee to deny rights of a refugee.
