dKosopedia:Post election reorg
From dKosopedia
Hi everyone,
I'd like to talk about structural changes to dKosopedia in the aftermath of the 2006 election. To begin with, we need to start including historical info, not just current events. For example, I have created two new pages for Iowa: Iowa Congressional Delegations and Iowa Statewide Officials. Is this a useful naming scheme?
- Good idea. With wikipedia, they have an enormous amount of historical information. Look at Vilsack and you see their succession box. My own feeling is there really is no need to duplicate WP's articles, but articles here should link back to the longer historical WP articles. While we indeed want an article on Chet Culver and Tom Vilsack, do we really need one on Terry Bransted? --Allamakee Democrat 23:06, 9 November 2006 (PST)
- No, and they should be changed immediately. These are bad page names because they don't conserve capitals. There is no reason whatsoever to capitalize "Statewide" or "Officials". Iowa statewide officials is fine.
How about the format? I used very simple tables for ease of maintenance, but Wikipedia's historical tables are much nicer looking. What about categories?
- There should be a category for each state.
- There are already categories for each state. For each state and territory, we'd have articles a la [[Iowa constitutional officers] which would the offices and current incumbent, and refer to Wikipedia for former incumbents. --Allamakee Democrat 23:06, 9 November 2006 (PST)
The situation with state legislatures is a little different - they have so many seats that they cannot be summarized in a table. I am planning to create pages for Iowa State House and Iowa State Senate, with links to previous years; e.g. Iowa State House, 2005-06. I'd appreciate your suggestions on alternate approaches. Also, does anyone have ideas on the 110th Congress? --Corncam 08:58, 9 November 2006 (PST)
- Follow Wikipedia's scheme as closely as possible. They've already beaten out most ambiguities there, and they never abuse capital letters in page names.
- Look at Bill Dix for how WP does state legislatures. A one-page table with links to state web sites and WP and dkP (where applicable) is easily done. I also mention Congressopedia which has articles on all 535 members of Congress (much nicer than ours) and since they pretty much represents dKp pov, linking to these articles is appropriate. They also do congressional district articles which partly resemble our own. --Allamakee Democrat 23:06, 9 November 2006 (PST)
