Narrative

Santorum is a very conservative member of the Senate in a state that went for John Kerry in 2004 by 2.5%. Democrats believe that Santorum's seat is extremely vulnerable, and are making it a priority for a pick-up in 2006. Santorum has gotten himself into some hot water with comments about women in the workforce and the sex scandals in the Catholic Church. Democrat Bob Casey, Jr, son of popular governor Bob Casey, Sr., who is Pennsylvania's state treasurer, announced his candidacy on March 5, 2005. Currently, his only primary opponents are college professor Chuck Pennacchio and Alan Sandals [1]. Polls pitting Casey against Santorum have generally indicated greater support for Casey.
Green Party candidate Carl Romanelli, got onto the ballot via a petition drive which was largely paid for by Republican donors. [2]
Rasmussen Reports (Oct. 10, 2006): Leans Democrat to Democrat.
