Peace of Augsburg

The 1555 Peace of Augsburg helped to end the long struggle between the Valois and the Hapsburgs but more importantly it laid the basis for the modern international legal theory of sovereignty on which the modern nation-state system is constructed. The principle of cuius regio eius religio meant that there would be no distinction in itnernational law betwen Roman Cathol;ic and Protestant states.
