Biography

Nick Smith represented Michigan's [http://www.house.gov/nicksmith 7th] district from 1992 to 2004. A fiscal and social conservative, Smith made national headlines in late 2003 when he claimed that Republican House leaders threatened to ruin his son's plans to replace him in the 7th district unless he voted for a bloated Medicare bill that he opposed. Smith later retracted his claim, but the ensuing headaches further undermined the public's confidence in the so-called "reform".

In a crowded 7-man primary to replace Smith, his son Brad came up short. Self-described moderate Republican John Schwarz won the nomination.
