The Natural Area Reserves Commission and the Hawaii State Natural Area Reserves System was established by the Legislature in 1971 to preserve and protect as unmodified as possible, in perpetuity, examples of Hawai'i's unique terrestrial and aquatic natural resources, in order that present and future generations may be able to learn about and appreciate these natural assets. The Commission advises the Board of Land and Natural Resources and the Governor on matters having to do with native ecosystems.
