Nativism
From dKosopedia
Nativism is a xenophobic sociopolitical policy which in the United States originated in the 19th century and has to some extent been recently revived by conservative populist Republican politicians.
Before the Civil War, nativists east of the Mississippi agitated against immigrants from Ireland and Germany using anti-Roman Catholic appeals. Nativists formed the American Party, nicknamed the "Know Nothing" Party, which thrived briefly during the 1840s and 1850s before morphing into the Republican Party. After the Civil War, nativists in California and other western states agitated against Chinese immigrants, characterizing them as the Yellow Peril.
Nativism was revived in the 1990s by Republican presidential candidate Patrick Buchanan who declared a "culture war" on Mexican immigrants. Nativism has grown in popularity among conservative populist politicians and other charlatans. Obscure politicians like Tom Tancredo, Chip Rogers and Russell Pearce have attracted attention with their Brown Bashing.
CNN anchor Lou Dobbs has uses his anchor position to "inveigh" against the dangers of illegal immigration. See this rant as an example.
