Mike Sullivan (D) served two terms as governor of Wyoming from 1987 to 1995. His 1990 reelection with 65.4% of the vote remains the largest margin of victory of any Wyoming governor. He was the architect of state government reorganization and was one of the first governors in the nation to successfully push welfare reform. He also advocated an overhaul of federal grazing management early in the Clinton administration. A personal friend of Clinton while they were members of the Democratic Governors Association, Sullivan traveled to New Hampshire in 1992 to stump for Clinton.

Though he was not term-limited, Sullivan sought the U.S. Senate seat of retiring GOP Sen. Malcolm Wallop in 1994. He was defeated by then-Congressman Craig Thomas by a lopsided margin in that year's national Republican landslide.

Sullivan later served as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland. He is currently practicing law in Casper, Wyo., where he specialized in mediation and international business. He was seriously considered as a Democratic cabinet appointee to the Interior Department in the first George W. Bush administration.

He is married to the former Jane Metzler of Powell, Wyo., and is the father of three adult children.
