Mike Gronstal (D - Council Bluffs) is the Democratic Majority Leader in the Iowa State Senate, where he represents District 50. Mike is a graduate of Council Bluffs St. Albert High School and Antioch College in Ohio. He also attended Loyola University in Chicago. He was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 1984; he was the minority leader from 1997-2006, and majority leader since then. He also served one term in the Iowa State House from 1983-1984.
He has been a leader in legislation to reduce class sizes, increase teacher quality, ensure adequate funding for Iowa’s community colleges, and provide the resources for the first statewide school infrastructure initiative. Grontsal is adamantly against the death penalty.
He is the Chair of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee.
Senator Gronstal and his wife, Connie, have two daughters, Kate, who is a civil engineer at Schemmer Associates in Council Bluffs, and Sara who is currently working on her masters degree at Minnesota State University at Mankato.
