Mike Connolly (D) is currently serving his fourth term in the Iowa Senate where he is an Assistant Democratic Leader. He represents Senate District 14, which includes Dubuque. Before being elected to the Senate, Senator Connolly served six terms in the Iowa House of Representatives.
Senator Connolly has been a lifelong advocate for education and children’s issues. Senator Connolly is Co-Chair of the Education Committee. He is also a member of the Appropriations, Ethics, Rules and Administration, State Government, Government Oversight and Ways and Means Committees.
Senator Connolly is an active member of the Dubuque County Democratic Party, Chair of the Education Division and Board Member of the Dubuque United Way. Connolly remains close to the people of his district through his participation in the Loras Club, St. Joseph’s Church, the Rotary Club, and the Dubuque Democratic Party.
Locally, Senator Connolly recently retired after 30 years of service in the Dubuque Community Schools. He taught history at Dubuque Senior High School for 20 years and served in administration for his final 10 years.
He attended St. Joseph’s Grade School and graduated from St. Joseph’s High School, which was located in Farley, Iowa. In 1967, he received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and in 1976 earned a Masters Degree from Loras College. Then, he served 6 years in the United States Army Reserves.
Connolly and his wife of 31 years, Martha Fessler, have two children, Maureen and John.
