Mick Cornett

From dKosopedia

Mick Cornett is the Republican Mayor of Oklahoma City but he unsucessfully sought the 2006 Republican nomination for the Fifth District seat in Congress (see Oklahoma U.S. House election, 2006). That seat was held by Ernest Istook (R) who is stepping down to run for Governor of Oklahoma.

Strange Messages

In announcing his candidacy Cornett said, "I believe that real change is coming to Washington and I plan to be a part of it. Central Oklahoma needs a strong, conservative leader speaking for us in Congress. We need a congressman with a proven track record of leadership, and someone who deeply understands what makes us special." This assumes of course that the "us" in question really is special in some way that can be explained. Did he intend to imply that his predecessor Istook was not a strong and/or conservative leader? Did he mean to say that 8 years of total Republican dominance of all three branches of the Federal government hadn't brought "real change" or that future Democratic Party electoral victories would bring "real change?"

Even more confusingly, Ed Lynn, Chairperson of the Draft Mick for Congress Committee said, "Mick has an unmatched record of...protecting our central Oklahoma values." Quote. What exactly is a central Oklahoma value and how do they differ from eastern Oklahoma or western Oklahoma values? What about values in exotic distant southeast Missouri or the Texas Panhandle? How different is the culture of central Oklahoma from the neighboring parts of the United States?

Background

Cornett is 47, a businessman and former broadcaster.
