Matt McCoy (D) was elected to the Iowa State Senate in 1996, after serving two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives. He represents Senate District 31, which includes the area west of Fleur, the airport, and West Des Moines.
He represents the neighborhood where he grew up -- south and southwest Des Moines. His parents, Bill and Mary Ann McCoy, owned Seller's Hardware, on the corner of Southwest 9th and Park Ave., for 30 years.
Sen. McCoy is Co-Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee. He also serves on the Commerce, Ways & Means, and Local Government Committees and is a member of the Administration & Regulation Budget Subcommittee. He has sponsored legislation to fight drunk boating, ensure children’s dental work is covered by insurance, and to place registration numbers on beer kegs.
Sen. McCoy is Vice President of the Downtown Community Alliance. He graduated from Dowling High School in 1984 and earned his is B.A. degree from Briar Cliff College in 1988. Active in the Boy Scouts of America his entire life, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout in 1981 and continues to support the Boy Scouts programs.
Sen. McCoy is on the Board of Managers of the Central Iowa YMCA, the Board of Directors for the Iowa Council of International Understanding, and the Board of Directors for Youth Emergency Services and Shelter. He served on the Polk County Conservation Board for five years, and is a graduate of the Des Moines Leadership Institute.
McCoy is strongly pro-choice, and he also came out as a gay man in 2003. Sen. McCoy has one son, Jack. He is a parishioner of St. Johns Lutheran Church.
Indicted
McCoy was indicted on extortion charges by U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker (Source: Political Forecast, March 24, 2007]). He was acquited of all charges on December 13, 2007.
