Mary Lundby was a former Republican State Senator and former Minority Leader from Marion, Iowa. She has served in the Iowa Senate since 1994, and spent 10 years in the Iowa House before that. On April 10, 2006, she replaced Stewart Iverson as Republican caucus leader in mid-session - something that had never happened in before. However, she resigned her leadership post at the end of the session, saying that she planned to retire from the State Senate when the 2008 session ends, and then run for a seat on the Linn county Board of Supervisors. However, her illness prevented her from running for any office in 2008.
She had been instrumental in helping Republicans gain control of the State House in 1992, but she was passed over for Speaker, so she moved to the State Senate.
Lundby strayed from Republican orthodoxy on several issues: she wants to raise the minimum wage, fought for mandatory coverage for mental illnesses, and supported anti-bullying rules for schools. She also opposed a constitutional amendment defining marriage as only between a man and woman.
She was born in Carroll, Iowa, and attended Upper Iowa University, where she met her husband Mike. In 1995, she was treated for cancer, but she passed away in January 2009.
