Mark Hass

Mark Hass a Democrat, is the Oregon State Representative for Oregon State House District 27 in the 2005 legislature.

Background

Hass is an Oregon native, growing up in the countryside of Washington County. When he was 13, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Oregon Governor Tom McCall presented him with his Eagle award. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon Journalism School. After reporting for radio and TV station in Oregon and Hawaii, Hass has won a teaching fellowship at American University in Washington D.C.

While going to school and teaching, Hass also covered Capitol Hill as a reporter for two years. He received his Master's Degree from American University in 1982.

In November 1984, Hass joined KATU-television in Portland, Oregon. His reporting duties took him to China, Korea, and Taiwan. He has won numerous Emmy and Associated Press awards. In 1999, the national advocacy for children organization, Child Inc., honored him for his reporting on religious groups that deny medical treatment to children.

In 1995, Hass founded a journalism scholarship fund, which is administered by the Oregon Student Assistance Commission. He is also a trustee for the Tom Dargan Scholarship, named after the founder of KATU Television.

Hass is an Emmy-award winning journalist who left his career in 1999 to make a difference in the state he loves. A year later, voters elected him to the Oregon legislature. In his first term, Hass quickly earned a reputation as an outspoken advocate for education. In 2001, Governor John Kitzhaber signed into law the Hass Scholarship bill which created incentives for businesses to set up scholarship funds for employees.

Hass was re-elected in 2002. His colleagues chose him as House Whip. As a legislative leader, he moved to the forefront of difficult issues facing Oregon.

He helped oversee a reform of the Public Employee Retirement System, a reform that will save taxpayers $9 billion dollars over the next ten years. He also played a leadership role in supporting a major transportation package to help Oregon's highways and bridges. In addition, he was one of a handful of legislative moderates who brokered an end to the record-breaking 257 day long 2003 legislative session. With his four years of experience on the House Revenue Committee, Hass has become one of the legislature's strongest advocates for restructuring Oregon's tax system.

Mark and Tamra Hass have one child, Isabelle, who is five years old. Tamra is a speech pathologist who works with autistic children in Portland and Beaverton.
