The Legalise Cannabis Alliance
Unbeknownst to the majority of the British people, a small political party was formed in 1992 to make the legalization of cannabis a major issue in British politics. The Campaign to Legalise Cannabis International Association, later known as the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, grew out of a group of Norwich people who felt more action needed to be taken to legalize marijuana. This group was especially inspired to take action following the incarceration of several people without bail on conspiracy charges. They made it their task to campaign for the legalization of cannabis throughout the world and secure the freedom of all cannabis prisoners. No small task for a group that had no experience or financial backing. The party's main concern is obviously to win votes. However, this concern is more in favor of bringing about a change in the law rather than gaining power. Howard Marks was the first to represent the party on the single issue of legalizing cannabis in Norwich North and South and in the Southampton Test and Neath constituencies. He only garnered less than 2% of the vote, but that 2% was all the encouragement the party needed. Slowly but surely the party gained more of the vote in each election. In fact, Danny Tungate won 7.5% of the vote in 1998, running in a local Norwich ward. In 1999, the group officially registered as a political party and became the Legalise Cannabis Alliance. The party adopted the leaf as its emblem. From there, the LCA created a set of Principles, Aims and Proposals, and a Manifesto. In the 2001 General Election, the party had candidates running in 13 constituencies. The goal of the party is not to win enough seats to run the government, but only to establish the full legalization of cannabis.
