Karen Awana

From dKosopedia

Karen Leinani Awana, represents the 44th Representative District, which includes Nanakuli, Kalaeloa, Honokai Hale, in the Hawaii State House of Representatives. She was first elected in 2006. Awana switched from the Republican to Democratic party in December 2007, saying "It's a blending of both -- to being raised in a Democratic community with family and friends who are Democrats and also knowing that positive change and outcomes can come from the Democratic Party." [1]

From the voter information provided by the Hawaii State Elections office:

I am a lifelong resident to this area. My greatgrandparents settled in Lualualei back in the late 1800’s and I am happy to call the Waianae Coast my home. Throughout the years, I have seen the steady deterioration in our community. No longer can we close our eyes to the problems that plague our ability to move in a positive direction. As your elected representative, I will focus on improving education, streamlining transportation, addressing housing solutions, combating illegal drug use, and support economic revitalization. We have a plethora of resources available for our community. Communication and collaboration are key to problem-solving at this level where the existing entities must work together. Engaging in working groups at the local level is fundamental in understanding the true needs of our region.
  • The Waianae Coast Neighborhood Board (At-Large Board member-Elect, Transportation Chair and Health Human Services Chair),
  • Ko Olina Training Fund (Board member-Governor appointed and Treasurer),
  • Waianae Coast Weed and Seed (Founder and Chair),
  • Waianae Olelo (Show Host) and the
  • Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Community Council (Community Member-Elect)
are organizations that I am actively involved and found to be integral to the betterment of House District 44. I am truly committed to Honokai Hale, Nanakai Gardens, Ko Olina, Kahe Point, Nanakuli, Maili, and Lualualei. [2]
